Dare To Prepare

If you're a parent with a soon-to-be teen driver, you may find yourself asking any number of questions about what you and your teen are facing. National statistics on crash rates and fatalities make it very clear that learning to drive is a serious undertaking and one that deserves your close attention. Most parents don't get the facts about novice driving laws, licensing requirements, parental role in driving, insurance, and other issues until their teen comes home with their learner's permit.

AAA wants to help with the introduction of Dare to Prepare. Dare to Prepare is a pre-permit workshop designed for parents and teens to attend together, providing them with the critical information they need to know before teens take the wheel.

Offered by AAA Tidewater Virginia, this free workshop will walk you through the steps necessary to obtain a learners permit and a driver's license in the state of Virginia. It also provides guidance and useful tools to help you and your teen go through the learning-to-drive process. The program is not intended to replace driver's education or even overlap such a course. Instead, it is designed to facilitate early discussion of driving safety and answer questions families may have.

During the 2-hour Dare to Prepare presentation, you will learn:

  • State and National statistics on teen driving
  • Graduated Licensing components
  • Virginia requirements for obtaining a learner's permit and a driver's license
  • Parent's role and responsibilities
  • What to look for in a driving school
  • Adding your teen to your auto insurance
  • Sample parent-teen contracts and driving logs
  • Practical tips on teaching teens to drive
  • What the police are really looking for
  • Resources and programs that can help

The program is not merely a lecture on the dangers of alcohol or a driver education course. It is interactive program designed as a forum for parents and soon-to-be driving teens to facilitate discussion about driving safety issues and answer question about the learning-to-drive process.

The workshop is free and each family attending will receive a complementary copy of Driver-ZED 3.0 DVD just for attending. Driver-Zed is an interactive risk management program that uses full-screen, full-motion, real-life video to place teens into more than 80 potential crash scenarios.

Parent/Teen Driver Contract

Teens want wheels and the freedom that driving brings. Parents are concerned for their children's safety. For teens to consistently operate a vehicle in a safe, economical and responsible manner, parental involvement is essential. AAA created the Vehicle Use and Operation Agreement form to help parents set specific guidelines and exact consequences for infractions of the agreement. Both parents and teens have a responsibility to maintain a relationship characterized by mutual respect and two-way communication.
